Got some time to just play around in Photoshop. (I know... crazy right?) Tried using a few new brushes I designed... I had zero plan... just went super fast and sloppy... and was done in just over an hour...

I plan to do more of this sorta stuff this year... just post more in general... and experiment!!!

Here is this year's Ghostbot Holiday card I was lucky enough to get to design. Alan Lau had the awesome idea for a robot that looked like a tree. I loved that concept and had fun trying to bring it off successfully.

Here's another Ghostbot project I was lucky enough to work on as Art Director:

I had a lot of fun on this one. It was my first collaboration with the extremely talented Ghostbot director, Roque Ballesteros. He was great to work for and gave me a lot of room to play with the look of the Backgrounds and Color. Roque pointed me towards Saul Bass, Kuntzel and Deygas'"Catch Me If You Can" title sequence, and the incredible Lou Romano. I added my own love of Charlie Harper and Bob Staake, and we were off developing the video late last year. Early on, with just those references and the song lyrics, but no board yet, I came up with this:

Roque was such a fan of the ideas in these roughs that he retooled some of the scenes to allow for these moments. I was very pleased with the "kaleidoscope" scene of the car zooming off.

Dolby Audio Commercial

Hello all. Another post that drafts off what Ghostbot has been posting.

So this video was produced about a year ago at Ghostbot. Alan Lau directed. I Art Directed the piece. It was a ton of fun and one of the first big projects I worked on at Ghostbot, where I could show off some of what I could do with color/design and composting. The first stage was pitching Dolby on the concept, so based off Alan's script for the spot, I created these frames with help from Alan Lau and Brad Rau on the character and shot selection.

The blue palette was inspired by the Dolby marketing style, but we began to worry that all blue would be a little too monotonous. So I worked up a few more color panels once the boards were underway. I liked this one, with the more stylized clouds but we ended up going with more recognizable cloud shapes in the final.

Here are the ones we submitted:

Client liked the new palette direction, so we were off to the races. I did a color script as I went along to try and keep track of how the BGs should be colored. I designed all the BGs and did all the AE composting as well as a smattering of Maya animation and Apple Motion Particles (Fish and Bubbles). As you can see, the color concepts were nearly identical to the final frames.

It was a blast and I loved getting to work with such a talented crew. Ghostbot brought the serious animation chops, including hiring Adam Phillips to animate the heavy fx scenes. I can't wait to do more!

Not a lot of new posts this year on Line Shape Color... been busy with a big project at work (I know! Who doesn't have a big project at work-- NO EXUSES!!!) To tide you over until I can talk about that, I figured I show this newly posted video from Ghostbot.

This advert is for one of Ghostbot's properties "ROSHAMBO!". It was smacked together last year, right before Comic Con and was directed by the mad-genius, Alan Lau. I did most of the background designs, tiny bit of animation, and all the compositing. Here it is, I hope you like:

Train Table

For my son's second birthday we had a "pre-owned" train table we wanted to upgrade. The play surface was pretty beat up so I thought it would be cool to design our own table top. Below is the result.

It was a fun design. Now that I see it so big, I would have added even more details... but I might have blown the deadline. Here is the Illustrator image:

So far it's a big hit.

FanBoy Concepts

When I was doing the titlecards for Fanboy, I would receive a workprint of the show to brainstorm concepts off of. The director would pick his favorite and I'd paint it up. Here are a few of my favorite thumbs I did. (Click the Titles to see final versions.)

I tried to go as fast as I could with these, limiting myself to about an hour to come up with 10 ideas. I enjoyed not worrying about the drawings as much as the idea. Even when I ran out at 7 ideas, I tried really hard to keep going even when i knew it would never fly (ie. Last panel on "Saving Private Chum Chum")

I hope to post some things I've been doing at Ghostbot soon. Stay tuned.

Justice Tarot Card

Hello. I was asked to participate in the Super Punch Tarot Card Project by the site's founder, John Struan. (Check out all the other amazing submissions above.) Below is my final submission:

I really struggled with this for some reason. I started on a totally different concept before throwing it overboard and going with the final bloody massacre version. Here is my first attempt:

I decided that the more static/graphic approach was a little too down the middle for the project.

FanBoy and Chum Chum

I recently was tasked with doing some title cards for the Nickelodeon show "Fanboy and Chum Chum" Most of what I have done hasn't yet aired, but one episode is on Nick's site, so I figured it was fair game to show here.

Eric Robles, the creator is a real nice guy and has been really supportive and cool to work with. Each card is different, and it is fun to try new things with each one. I look forward to showing off the other 18 cards I have done for Season 1 once they get on the air.

I've been working at the amazing world famous animation studio, GhostBot, for a few months now. It is run by great people and I'm having a real fun time working there.

I sit at a desk facing a Ghostbot poster of the three characters that represent the studio heads; Alan Lau, Brad Rau and Roque Ballesteros as "ghost-bots". They are awesome! It got me doodling "ghost-bots" and below is the result. It is a great name that generates some fun designs.

Last year, Wildbrain was looking for ways to promote it's sister company KidRobot, makers of the world famous MUNNY! They asked the artists internally to pitch concepts for shorts. I thumb-nailed out an idea that my friend and Wildbrain employee Josh Book thought was neat, so we started thinking about making it as a CG short. It never got off the ground before they shuttered the SF studio, but I did create a few little images I thought were kinda fun and give an idea of what the short would have been like.

El Tigre Background Origins

So way back in 2003 Jorge Gutierrez created a show for Disney called "Pepe the Bull". I was asked to work on it as a background designer. Below is a sampling of some of the bgs I created for it.

It had a very simple almost children's book style. Jorge and I were very excited about J. Otto and Jim Flora at the time, whose influences I think are pretty apparent here. Below is another image from the same production.

Pepe did not end up going to series, but the incredibly talented Jorge Gutierrez and his partner Sandra Equihua were not daunted, and got right back to work, developing another show, this one called "El Tigre". In 2004 they asked me to do some images for the pitch bible. Below are a few of the images that were in the document they used to pitch the show.

Jorge would give me the text that would run below the art, and so I would design the image. The desert town was called "Tijuana" in the pitch bible and is what eventually became "Calavera" in the actual show.

The school got redone quite a bit, but the cobblestone path remained.

We used the pitch bible version of Sartana's Lair as a jumping off point in the series, but we added a lot more detail and towers.

The factory never made an appearance in the show as it was envisioned in the early drafts of the pitch. It was going to be where Rodolfo worked as a citizen when he wasn't being a hero.

It was quite the journey from Pepe to Tigre. Hope you find it interesting to see the development from point A to point B.

Something I did last year that was never used.

It was a fun experiment to limit myself to only straight lines with a paper cut-out mosaic approach. This look was approved for the segment it was intended, and I was able to complete other images with this general direction applied. It turned out pretty good. I look forward to showing it at a later date.

While I was at Wildbrain, I had the opportunity to pitch for producing one of the "storytime" segments for Season 3 of "Yo Gabba Gabba". Below is the art I put together for the proposal in about 2 days:

I have removed any of the writing that would explain the images, since it hasn't aired, but it's pretty self explanatory.

Yo Gabba already had a ton of people clamoring to work on the show, so they passed on using me this season. Bummer! I can't wait to see how it turns out in the actual show.

Art Deco

On a job at Wildbrain last year I was given the assignment of designing an "Art Deco" music video. Below is some of the concept work I came up with. Eventually the look of the piece went in a new direction, so none of these images were used; but I thought I'd share it here. For reference I looked at a lot of the WPA posters along with the brilliant Bob Staake. It was a lot of fun. It's a look I'd love to return to at a later date and explore more.

Visiting my freind Tod Polson's blog I was inspired by the fantastic birds he is creating for a "Birds of Thailand" show. I thought it was an interesting little project to try my hand at, so I chose the Black-faced Spoonbill.

I have also been looking at a lot of Charley Harper recently ( if you had not guessed). His work is amazingly simple yet very evocative of the actual animal. He doesn't reduce the creatures to cartoon simplifications, he seems to effortlessly crystallize only the important details of the animal into a perfect illustration. Very inspiring.

I am not sure I lived up to either Charley or Tod, but I had fun trying.
